Copy Editing

Once you’ve gone through a couple of drafts for your project you might just be ready for a copy edit. Copy editing happens just before the manuscript goes to the designer or printer and is used to check details like grammar, spelling, punctuation and facts.

To gauge what a potential project with me could look like, please peruse the example below.

Example Project

Scope

Evie produces an indie roleplaying game and is just about ready to release a new 195,000-word edition of the rulebook. Their staff copywriters have prepared the material. As a quality control step before it goes to their printer, Evie hires a copy editor to ensure the material, including all tables and images, is as polished as possible. Because there is a lot of cross-referencing required, and because the rules must be checked thoroughly for logic and consistency, they opt for a detailed copy edit.

Estimate

The edit will take approximately 39 business days.

The estimated cost for Evie’s detailed copy edit of 195,000 words is $8,580 plus taxes.

Excerpt

The excerpt below shows how Evie’s project moves through the submission, feedback and revision stages.

Feedback is presented in queries (numbered comments on the right-hand side) and in-line suggestions addressing Evie’s concerns about the polish and logic of the material. Evie can ask questions to clarify the queries, but they are responsible for making any changes themselves.
