Writing can be an epic undertaking. Handing your project off to a skilled editor is an investment that readies it for publication. But what an editor does depends on who you ask. Some imagine a light touch-up just before publication. Others may think of extensive cutting and rewriting.

In reality, there are many types of editing, and terminology varies even within the industry. My services align with the definitions laid out by Editors Canada.

As each project is unique, I have no fees listed. I have instead provided example projects—including scope, estimate and excerpts—for each service listed below to give you an idea of potential cost as well as my editing style.

I encourage you to reach out so we can assess your project together. If my initial quote exceeds your timeline or budget, I am happy to tailor the process to fit your needs or help point you to a trusted colleague whose services will be a better fit.

Book Coaching

What is it? Custom support during any stage of the writing process. Coaching may include assistance in organizing project work, help developing ideas, reviews of completed work or guidance on publication steps.

Also known as: Writing coaching.

Best suited for: Authors who need an accountability partner to complete writing projects, want mentorship and guidance during the writing process or are seeking to complete a project quickly and in as few drafts as possible.

Manuscript Evaluation

What is it? An evaluation of the manuscript presented in a report of approximately 8 to 12 pages. The report will detail strengths, larger points to address and quick fixes.

Also known as: Manuscript critique.

Best suited for: Authors unsure of their next steps or those looking for a quicker, less expensive entry point than a full edit. Evaluations can be especially helpful for authors confident in refining their work using more general feedback.

Structural Editing

What is it? A high-level review of organization and content. Revising, reordering, cutting or expanding material as well as suggesting alternate formatting (e.g., bullet points vs. a paragraph) all fall within the scope of a structural edit.

Also known as: Substantive, manuscript, content or developmental editing.

Best suited for: Early drafts prior to sentence-level revisions. Gives special attention to presentation or logic (e.g., order of ideas, plot and character developments, concision).

Stylistic Editing

What is it? A line-by-line edit to clarify meaning, ensure coherence and flow and refine language. It may include eliminating jargon or clichés, ensuring consistent language level, adjusting syntax or reinforcing author style and voice.

Also known as: Line or sentence-level editing.

Best suited for: Middle-stage drafts after structure has been reviewed. Great for reviewing tone or mood, ensuring appropriateness for the audience, medium and purpose.

Copy Editing

What is it? Editing to ensure correctness, accuracy, consistency and completeness. Reviews grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage and consistency of mechanics and facts as well as visual or graphic elements.

Also known as: Line editing (though distinct from stylistic editing).

Best suited for: Drafts nearing completion after reviews of structure and style. Provides peace of mind on mechanical issues such as typos or inconsistent punctuation or grammar.

How it Works

Curious what it would look like to work with me? Peruse the project steps below.

  • Book a discovery call, send me an email (marykehoe@elixireditorial.ca) or fill out my intake form to get started. Providing lots of detail will speed up the next couple of steps, but don’t sweat it if you don’t have everything figured out. I typically respond to email inquiries and form submissions within 1-2 business days.

  • Once I have the initial details, we’ll set a time to get better acquainted and go over the finer details of the project. This will help us determine the type and level of editing suited for your project so I can give you a basic quote.

  • Next, I’ll request your full manuscript so I can provide a more accurate quote and a free sample edit. This way, you can ensure my editing style is right for you.

  • If you’re happy with the sample edit and project terms, I’ll provide a full contract. Once that’s signed, a 50% deposit secures your spot in my schedule.

  • Once the start date arrives, I’ll begin editing your manuscript and keep you posted on progress. I typically use Microsoft Word or Google Docs, but we can discuss other options if needed. Most edits take two full passes.

  • You’ll get some time to review all of my suggestions and ask me for clarification. I’ll work any last changes into the final edited draft.

  • I’ll send you the edited manuscript and the invoice with the total amount (minus the deposit). Once you send the final payment, that’s a wrap!
